Cherokee County State Court hears “all misdemeanor and traffic criminal cases filed with the Clerk,” plus a broad range of civil litigation. It sits in the Frank C. Mills III Justice Center at 90 North Street, Canton, with offices open Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Three judges preside: Chief Judge W. Alan Jordan, Judge A. Dee Morris and Judge Michelle L. Helhoski. The court also operates two accountability court programs — DUI Court and Veterans Court.
One practical rule worth knowing: State Court judges will allow a Georgia-licensed attorney to waive arraignment by filing a waiver with the State Court Clerk’s Office, with a copy to the judge’s judicial assistant. Ask your lawyer about it early — it can save a trip.

If a deputy or the Georgia State Patrol wrote the citation, or the charge is a state misdemeanor rather than a city ordinance, this is where the case goes. City citations from Canton, Woodstock, Holly Springs or Ball Ground stay in those municipal courts instead.

DUI Court and Veterans Court
State Court operates dedicated DUI Court and Veterans Court programs. Whether a case is eligible is a decision for the court and counsel, not for a bonding company — but it is worth raising with a defense attorney early, because these programs can change the shape of a case substantially.
