The number is set by law, not by the bondsman
Georgia caps it. O.C.G.A. § 17-6-30 says sureties on criminal bonds “shall not charge or receive more than 15 percent of the face amount of the bond set,” and that notwithstanding that cap, a surety may charge a minimum of $50.00 per bonded charge or offense. Charging more than the cap is a misdemeanor under the same statute.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office publishes the same figure on its own bond page: a non-refundable fee of 15% or a minimum of $50 per bonded charge.
You will find websites claiming Georgia premiums are “typically 10 percent” or “about 12 percent.” They are wrong, or they are describing another state. The statutory cap is 15%, and that is what Cherokee County publishes.

No — and that is the trade you are making
The surety premium is non-refundable. It is fully earned when the bond is posted, because that is the moment the bonding company takes on the full face amount of the bond as its own liability. The Cherokee County Sheriff describes it in exactly those terms: a non-refundable fee.
A cash bond is different. You pay the full bond amount and it comes back at the conclusion of the case — minus the $20 non-refundable state bond fee, and minus any portal fees if you paid online.
The real question is not “which is refundable” but “how much money do you need available right now, and for how long.” On a $25,000 bond, a surety costs $3,750 today. A cash bond costs $25,000 today and returns it in a year.

What every option actually costs in Cherokee County
- Surety bond (bail bondsman): 15% of the bond, minimum $50 per charge. Non-refundable. Nothing else tied up.
- Cash bond at the jail: the full bond in cash or cashier’s cheque, plus a $20 non-refundable state fee in exact change. No change is given. Refunded at case conclusion.
- Online cash bond: the full bond plus a $10 automation fee plus a 5% administrative fee, plus the $20 state fee.
- Property bond: no premium, but clear equity of twice the bond plus a $5,000 homestead exemption, a deed, a paid tax receipt, a mortgage statement, every deed holder present with photo ID, a $20 cash fee, and a lien on the property until the case ends.
Costs that are not the bond
A bond buys release pending court. It is not a fine, it is not restitution, and it is not a lawyer. Budget separately for defense counsel, court fines and fees, any electronic monitoring the court orders (which the defendant pays to the provider directly under O.C.G.A. § 17-6-1.1), drug testing, and any classes or treatment the court requires.
The Sheriff’s own bond page says it in capital letters: “A BOND IS NOT A FINE!”

The statutory minimum cannot be discounted, but how you pay the premium is a conversation worth having with us. Bring what you have. We would rather work something out than watch a family sit in a parking lot at 2 a.m. doing arithmetic.
